Why an accredited lab is important.

Working with an accredited lab gives you both credibility and peace of mind. You can trust that an accredited testing lab is adhering to practices and principles that are important to your industry—and your customers. A laboratory must submit to intense review of its facilities, procedures, staff, and more to become accredited. 

The testing experts in accredited labs are well versed in the best test methods and laboratory practices in the industry, which means more accurate testing data, fewer errors, and safer conditions. Additionally, test data from an accredited laboratory will be universally accepted, which makes for a more efficient product development timeline and greater speed to market.

What is ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation?

ACE Laboratories is proud to be an ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory. The ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is the largest accreditation board in North America. ANAB provides accreditation services to organizations in both the public and private sectors, including inspection bodies, validation and verification bodies, and laboratories, such as ACE Laboratories. We stand behind our choicewhile others in our industry may opt for A2LA as their accreditation board, it doesn’t offer the size and international recognition of ANAB.

The ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation process for a testing laboratory is fairly rigorous. Accurate testing relies on a variety of key factors that must be considered when determining accreditation eligibility. A laboratory seeking ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation will submit to an intensive document review and an assessment process, which might include:

  • Interviews with staff to evaluate their skill and technical competence.
  • On-site visits to review procedures, instrumentation, and facilities.
  • Remote evaluation.

ANAB leaves no stone unturned when evaluating laboratories that apply for accreditation. Even accredited labs are subjected to regular audits and follow-up to ensure ongoing compliance with ANAB accreditation standards.

Laboratories that comply with accreditation requirements will usually receive both a certificate of accreditation and a scope of accreditation. The scope of accreditation is a detailed list of the specific test standards the laboratory is certified to test for. In the rubber industry, the scope of accreditation will usually include ASTM standards.

What is ASTM?

American Standard Test Methods (ASTM) International is the developer and publisher of a vast library of testing standards. ASTM standards offer a credible, industry-wide benchmark for measuring the quality, performance, or safety of a given product or material. ASTM has published over 12,500 standards, which are used in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Most ASTM standards are voluntary consensus, which means there may not be specific laws or other binding requirements involved. For example, a certain company might only purchase materials that adhere to a given ASTM standard, or ASTM standard adherence may be used in a marketing campaign to demonstrate credibility. Some ASTM standards have been adopted by municipal, state, and federal governments.

ASTM International does not conduct testing or enforce compliance, which is why many companies turn to independent accredited laboratories for testing support. ACE Laboratories is proud to have earned an ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from ANAB. Our scope of accreditation includes dozens of ASTM standard tests as well as custom testing protocols unique to our laboratories.
